Jaouen Hadjam: From Being Benched in Ramadan to the Premier League

Jaouen Hadjam was dropped by his manager for refusing to break his fast in Ramadan on matchdays. Three years later, he is a Premier League player. His journey serves as a powerful reminder: when you stand firm on your principles to please Allah, your efforts are never lost.

He Chose His Fast

In 2020, Jaouen Hadjam made his professional debut with Paris FC before joining Ligue 1 side FC Nantes in early 2023. When Ramadan arrived, Nantes manager Antoine Kombouaré instructed his squad not to fast on matchdays. While others complied, Hadjam remained firm in his religious duty. As a result, he was dropped from the squad for a match against Reims.

The Rise Beyond France

Rather than letting the setback define him, Hadjam stayed steadfast. In January 2024, he moved to Swiss champions BSC Young Boys, where he went on to make 98 appearances across all competitions, winning the Swiss Super League and competing on European football's biggest stages. His stellar performances earned him a primary role with Algeria, including three appearances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Now, Brighton & Hove Albion has signed the 23-year-old left-back on a five-year deal through June 2031 for £9.5 million. From being benched in France over his fast to reaching the top flight of English football, his progression has been remarkable.

The Cost and the Reward

Standing up for his faith initially cost Hadjam his place on the pitch. Yet he refused to compromise on Ramadan, a sacred month filled with immense spiritual reward. What appeared to be a temporary loss opened the door to far greater opportunities.

The Club That Left Him Behind

Today, the manager who dropped him is long gone and Nantes has been relegated to Ligue 2, ending their 13-year streak in the French top flight, while Hadjam steps into the spotlight of the Premier League.

Lessons from Jaouen Hadjam’s Journey

  • Seek Allah’s Pleasure First: In a fleeting world, pleasing Creator comes before pleasing managers or authorities.
  • Firmness Brings Success: Stand firm on your religious obligations; non-negotiable worship yields long-term blessings.
  • Elevated After Trial: Allah uplifts those who endure tests with patience and conviction.
  • Prioritize Your Faith: When you prioritize your obligations to Allah, He opens doors you never imagined.
