Before Hajj

Wearing Ihram
The pilgrim sets niyyah (intention) for Hajj. This intention is called Talabiya. He then has to wear an Ihram before reaching Miqat.

Optional Tawaf
On entering Masjid-al-Haram, pilgrims perform Tawaaf. It is an integral part of the pilgrimage in which the pilgrims circle the Ka’bah seven times in an anti-clockwise rotation.

Stay at Mina
After the Fajr prayer on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, the pilgrims leave for Mina and stay overnight till the Fajr of the next day i.e. the 9th of Dhul Hijjah.

Visit Arafat
After offering Fajr on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, the pilgrims leave Mina for the ground of Arafat. Here the pilgrims pray till sunset, after which they leave for Muzdalifa.

Stay at Muzdalfa
After sunset, the pilgrims leave the ground of Arafat for Muzdalifa, where they collect pebbles to throw at the Jamarat the next day.

Stoning of Jamarah
On the 10th of Dhul Hijjah or the first day of Eid, the pilgrims leave for Mina after the Fajr prayers. Here they stone the Satan by throwing pebbles at the three pillars/Jamarat. Muslims perform this same ritual for the next three days before leaving for Makkah.

Cutting Hair
After the sacrifice, men shave their heads and women cut a lock of their hair.

Animal Sacrifice
Ramy Jamarat is carried out with seven stones thrown at each of the three Jamarah after which animals are sacrificed.

Removing Ihram
Pilgrims then take off Ihram, wear normal clothes and perform Tawaf before heading back to Mina to spend the night.

Final Tawaf
After stoning, when the pilgrims arrive back to Makkah, they perform the Final or Farewell Tawaf.
