“In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful”

Sawm (fasting) is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is obligatory for all Muslims to fast during the holy month of Ramadan. It is during this month that the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Ramadan is a month of fasting in which Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset, during daylight hours and practice the art of self-control.

The date on which Ramadan begins changes each year. It follows the lunar calendar which is based on the Moon. It is determined by the first confirmed sighting of the new moon. But there is often controversy about when it starts, with different countries observing it on different days. Muslims will observe the first day of Ramadan either on 16th May, 17th May or 18th May of this year.
