In this blog, we will address a question several Muslims have in mind and need proper guidance about. That is:
“Why is it necessary to face the Qibla while observing Salah when Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala is present everywhere?”
First and foremost, it’s essential to note that facing Qibla has nothing to do with Allah (SWT) being present in a particular place or direction.
It is specifically mentioned twice in the Holy Qur’an when Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala says:
“And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah. Indeed, Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” - Al-Baqarah: 115
In another verse, it is stated yet again:
“To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path.” - Al-Baqarah: 142
However, that said, Muslims are still compelled to take guidance from the Qur’an at all turns of life.
And so in the Holy Qur’an, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala also ordains:
“So from wherever you go out [for prayer, O Muḥammad], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, and indeed, it is the truth from your Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.” - Al-Baqarah: 149
Each word mentioned in the Qur’an is solely chosen by Allah (SWT) Himself. And in this verse, it is clearly stated that Muslims must face Masjid al-Haram when observing their Salah.
Therefore, isn’t that reason enough for Muslims to be facing Qibla while performing this obligatory duty that we observe five times a day? After all, we’re directly ordered by the Almighty One to do so.
Not to mention, failing to comply with His directions holds us accountable for our neglectful actions not just in this life but also on the Day of Judgment.
