A Syrian Father Hid a Secret Library Inside His Wall for 15 Years
In the city of Homs, Syria, an elderly man named Mustafa Alwan (known as Abu Bilal) took extraordinary measures to protect his family's literary treasures. In 2011, as the Syrian civil war erupted, government forces loyal to the Assad regime began targeted destructions. Anticipating the destruction of his library, he resolved to save what he treasured.
Building a Hidden Sanctuary
Before his son Bilal left for Kuwait, he had to leave his extensive personal library behind. To protect these books, Quranic ijazahs (teaching certifications), and vital family documents, Abu Bilal built a concrete wall inside his home.
He carefully packed hundreds of volumes, wrapping them in cardboard and fiberwood for insulation, and sealed them completely out of sight behind a newly constructed wall.
Hammering the False Wall
Abu Bilal vowed to leave the collection sealed until freedom returned. Following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's government, he returned to his home. On 24 August 2026, armed with a hammer, he broke through the fifteen-year-old concrete wall to recover the hidden library intact.
His son, writer and activist Bilal Alloun, captured the emotional moment on video and shared it online, where the story quickly went viral.
A Legacy Shared With the World
The surviving collection consists primarily of Islamic jurisprudence, religious studies, and Arabic linguistics - many belonging to his sons, who are students of sacred knowledge. Though it remains a private family collection, Abu Bilal expressed his willingness to open the library to any student or scholar in need.
His story serves as a powerful reminder: tyrants may attempt to destroy books, but true knowledge outlives those who try to bury it.
