Discover Islam in China, home to over 20 million Muslims, 7th-century mosques, and a rich halal culture.
Written by Khadija Adnan
Trade was central to Arab society, allowing early Muslims to travel across continents and spread the message of Islam. One of the furthest regions reached by early Muslim traders was China, a country with a rich Islamic history that many are unaware of today.
Estimates place China’s Muslim population between 17 and 26 million people, a number larger than the individual populations of Jordan, the UAE, or Qatar. China is home to ten recognized Muslim ethnic minorities, with the Hui and Uyghur communities being the largest. Because some rural communities in northern regions are undercounted, the actual figure of the Muslim population in China may be even higher.
Muslim traders reached China within decades of the Prophet’s (SAW) passing. Guangzhou's Huaisheng Mosque is traditionally traced back to the Tang Dynasty, while Beijing's Niujie Mosque dates to 996 AD. The Great Mosque of Xi'an remains one of the oldest and largest active Islamic houses of worship in the country.
Chinese Islamic architecture seamlessly blends cultural heritage with religious practice. Rather than traditional Middle Eastern domes, many historic Chinese mosques feature pagoda-style minarets, sweeping tiled roofs, and tranquil courtyard gardens.
In China, halal is written as 清真 (qīngzhēn), which translates literally to "pure and true." You will see this signage on food packaging and restaurant storefronts across the country, making halal options accessible for visitors and locals alike. However, it is always better to check the ingredients yourself, even though it is far easier for you to find halal food options in China.
Located at the ancient eastern end of the Silk Road, Xi'an's historic Muslim Quarter offers a unique blend of Islamic heritage and modern city life. Its bustling streets are lined with halal food stalls run by Hui families for generations, offering an unforgettable cultural experience.
The ummah is wider than we often imagine. It is enriched by diverse cultures while all hearts remain centered on Islam.
