12 Countries Move to Ban Trade With Illegal Israeli Settlements

Twelve nations have taken coordinated action to restrict and ban trade with illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The United Nations Rights Office welcomed the decision, praising the coalition for aligning their economic policy with international law. This joint diplomatic push marks a major escalation in global pressure on settlement expansion.

12 Nations Lead Joint Action 

The coalition consists of the UK, France, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. The foreign ministers stated that Israel's actions undermine a two-state solution amid record settler violence. Specifically, the UK, France, and Canada will introduce national bans on settlement goods, while the other nine will support European restrictions or consider their own measures.

Response to E1 Settlement Tenders

The catalyst for this joint action was Israel issuing tenders for around 1,200 settlement homes in the E1 area east of Jerusalem. The 12-nation initiative responds to this expansion by moving to restrict commercial activity linked to illegal Israeli settlements and outposts in the West Bank. 

UK Foreign Secretary Steps Up Pressure

Leading the announcement, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband declared that Britain will no longer stand by while international law is violated in Palestinian communities. Stating that the UK "will not be a bystander" to settlement expansion, he formally announced a ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements.

Israel's Diplomatic Reaction 

Israeli authorities expressed strong opposition to the measures, describing the joint action as a serious political mistake. In retaliation, Israel ordered the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem and indicated it would exclude the UK from key Gaza-related decision-making processes.
