Europe has realized it is time to step away from screens and move back to basic learning. Nations across the continent, including Sweden, Finland, Norway, France, Italy, and Denmark, are officially bringing back physical textbooks and handwritten notes.

With the introduction of digital devices across all levels of education, policymakers have now decided to reduce the use of digital screens. Over the past few years, the use of digital devices has resulted in:

  • Negative impacts from excessive screen time
  • Decline in academic results
  • Less comprehensive reading
  • Reduced creativity, problem solving and cognitive thinking

Why the Shift from Screen to Paper?

Too much screen time shortens kids' attention spans and makes it harder for them to remember what they learn. When studying on devices, students easily get distracted by open tabs, pop-ups, and what their classmates are watching. Studies show that when children work directly with real books and write by hand, they understand the material deeper and build stronger problem-solving skills.

Another point to consider is that students will have access to AI-based tools that further decrease their thinking ability and cognitive learning. Furthermore, there is now greater awareness of the disruptions digital devices cause in the classroom.

Returning to What Works Best

While digital tools are helpful in education, textbooks and handwritten notes beat the benefits that students get from studying on screens. Striking the right balance between technology and paper could ultimately create a stronger foundation for future generations.
