Saturday, 14th of October proved to be a devastating day for the Somali people of Mogadishu. A man blew up a truck bomb in the middle of the capital. The attack has been said to trace back to the militant group, al-Shabaab (courtesy: The Guardian). Initially 281 people had been reported dead in the grasp of this terrible incident, however numbers are increasing by the day, with a lot of people still missing. Another 300 are reported to have been injured with the death toll on a continual rise. It is believed to be one of the most lethal attacks in recent times.
Many people have been burnt while a lot are still buried in the rubble. Most of them cannot even be identified, given the condition of the corpses. Some upsetting stories have also come up in the wake of this attack. A girl, Maryam Abdullahi, was also among the people killed. She was a medical student who was to graduate a doctor this week. Her father had flown in from the UK to attend her graduation but sadly ended up attending her funeral instead.
Sadly, this incident is not receiving the media coverage it deserves. Why is it that we always see the media giving more coverage to terrorist attacks taking place in first world countries? It makes one wonder if different lives have a different price tag attached to them. It is very sad to see how the Western media does not value the lives of people from other parts of the world, more specifically third world countries. More than 300 people were killed in this attack but the way it is not being highlighted on social media platforms is shameful! You might see a few #IAmMogadishu hashtags dwindling on your news feed, condemning the incident, however the global solidarity normally seen after terrorist attacks in the Western countries is not visible at all after this horrific incident. Let’s hope Allah (SWT) eases the pain of the Somalis suffering in this trying time and people around the world start being more empathetic towards every person instead of displaying selective empathy.
