Stories of Muslim Converts: Deidra Riedel

It’s true that many of the converts face a myriad of difficulties, especially in the very beginning but they muster the courage to go ahead and not look back. Everyone has their own unique story to tell but mostly, don’t they all share a similarity? Well, of course! Here's what mine entails of.

My Story…

Before converting to Islam, I was a person who grew up in what many would call a dysfunctional violent home where alcohol was prevalent and so was abuse. As a child and an adult, I was physically and emotionally abused and suffered a lot. Yet to this day I tell people who say that’s awful! At that time, yes it was, but had it not been for the many hardships I suffered I wouldn’t be the compassionate humble person I am today. Since converting to Islam, I’ve learned everything we go through in life, be it good or bad, is decreed by Allah (SWT). Alhamdulilah!

My motivation to embrace Islam came from the feeling in my heart what I was taught to believe regarding Catholicism couldn’t be right. I would ask why should I pray to Jesus (Hazrat Isa (AS)) when he himself said do not pray to me but to your Father in Heaven? I was never given a straight answer, and I found myself for years feeling void inside and also confused about the truth; praying for answers and direction.

As a Muslim convert, the challenges I face are having been called a terrorist by family. I can no longer come around unless I change my ways; precisely, to go back to Catholicism. I’ve been laughed at and told to go back where I came from. You see I am the only Muslimah in the town I live in and it’s unusual to see a woman covered from head to toe so I attract attention at times. Although, there are also many, Alhamdulilah, who smile when they catch the sight of me. As far as getting help is concerned, I pray and make Dua to Allah (SWT) for Sabr (patience) and intend to reach out to other Muslims for inspiration.

My message for converts or potential converts is to not be afraid to reach out when you feel alone, frustrated, confused or even happy and joyful inside to other Muslims in your community, online, at your local mosque or Islamic center. Chances are that there are many others who also went through what you’re going through now. Just know that you’re a part of a beautiful Ummah that I’ve found truly loves and cares about each other. Jazak AllahKhair!
