This Malaysian Mosque has just launched First ever Rice ATM for the Poor!

A Rice ATM, sounds new doesn’t it? Of course, such things are not very common and it’s always good to hear that fellow Muslims take such initiatives to provide the maximum level of convenience in the face of humanity.

A mosque in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, February 15, introduced a new and novel way to offer rice to the needy through a specially designed Automated Teller Machine (ATM). The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) in a Facebook post stated that the “Rice ATM” was the first of its kind in Malaysia. Well, now it’s time for Malaysians to withdraw some rice.

The machine is located at the Al-Akram Mosque in Kampung Datuk Keramat and was introduced to render aid to the “asnaf” (the needy) population, also considered as Zakat beneficiaries. Zakat, also amongst five pillars of Islam, is a payment made annually under Islamic law and used for religious and charitable purposes.

To collect the rice, users tap a card on the machine’s sensor. The machine will then dispense 2 KG of rice through a collection point at the base of the ATM. Those who wish to make a donation can also do so by depositing cash through a slot in the machine. JAWI said:

“The proceeds will be used to purchase more rice for the needy.”

Thanks to the Al-Akram Masjid's management and the parties involved in providing this facility! We hope that these kinds of ATM machines are installed in other areas; not just Malaysia but worldwide! What do you think about this? Let others know of this innovative move taken and also share your comments below.
