Google AI Overview faced backlash for Islamophobic search responses. Can Muslims trust AI for truth?
Written by Khadija Adnan
Google Search AI Overview came under great criticism for Islamophobic, biased, and misleading responses to the phrase "I am alone with a Muslim." The responses included emergency guidance, advising users to immediately leave the area and even call 911 if they felt unsafe.
When the same phrase was searched for an Israeli, there was no warning. It mentioned them as an individual like anyone else, with their own unique personality, background, and thoughts.
Imam Omar Suleiman shared the two answers side by side and criticized Google over what he called Islamophobic behavior. The comparison spread quickly, with users questioning Google and Gemini for using the language of danger for Muslims while not doing so for others.
People searched further for other ethnicities and regions, finding biased and negative responses for groups like African and South Asian communities. In contrast for western nationalities the response was lighthearted and neutral. Biased and stereotypical responses show that AI is not reliable and can shape public opinion with false information or representation.
Google took notice and has since stated that results in this category are not what they should be. The answer has changed and now reads that being alone with a Muslim is no different from being alone with anyone else.
The Google AI Overview, Gemini’s answers sit above every other result, creating a summary from other articles and its own understanding. Most people never scroll past it.
Everyone is talking about and preferring AI tools for information and organized data because they have access to vast knowledge. As Google dominates the global search market, questions are now raised for its reliability and accuracy.
The questions at hand are: Is AI truthful? Can you trust it entirely for an unbiased response? Can Muslims trust AI for truth?
