Emigration of our Prophet (PBUH) from Makkah to Madinah

Every year when the new Islamic Year started, we are always reminded of the importance of the Hijrah (Migration) event in Islamic history. Hijrah, which is one root of the word with hijriyah, is the migration of the Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) and his companions from Makkah to Yathrib (renamed to Madinah). Because of the importance of this event, the second caliph Umar ibn Khaththab (R.A.) then declared the hijrah as the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

Migration from Makkah is actually not what the Prophet (S.A.W.) wanted because Makkah was the place he loved most. But the Prophet (S.A.W.) and his companions (R.A.) had no other choice when faced with an unfriendly situation in Makkah. The bad treatment experienced by Muslims early in the years prompted the Prophet (S.A.W.) to order his companions (R.A.) to come out of Makkah and seek refuge elsewhere. And migration is the most reasonable price that must be paid to get the freedom to practice the worship they believe in.

In addition to seeking refuge, migration was also a part of long-term plan of the Prophet (S.A.W.). The future of his religion relied heavily on his success in building a strong and neat society that will be the foundation of his mission.
