Qalb and Qur’an: 5 Verses In the Book of Allah (SWT)

‘Qalb’ is an Arabic expression, which means “heart” in the simplest terms. It may sound like any other word we say in passing during conversations. However, when we reflect upon the Qur’an, the word ‘Qalb’ takes on an entirely different meaning.

There are different contexts in which Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala has mentioned the word ‘Qalb’ in the Qur’an. A sound heart is referred to as one that’s free of arrogance and tries to please the Almighty One. On the other hand, a weak heart, as mentioned in the Book of Allah (SWT), is controlled by vain desires and lust.

Here are five verses in the Holy Qur’an that includes the word ‘Qalb’ in different state of affairs:

1- About “Different Types of Heart”

“Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some of them that split open and water comes out, and there are some of them that fall down for fear of Allah. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.” – Surah Al-Baqarah: 74

2- About “Arrogance and Dispute Without Authority”

“Those who dispute concerning the signs of Allah without an authority having come to them - great is hatred [of them] in the sight of Allah and in the sight of those who have believed. Thus does Allah seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant.” – Surah Ghafir: 35

3- About “Steadfastness”

“[Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” – Surah Al-Imran: 8

4- About “Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah [SWT])”

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” – Surah Ar-Ra’d: 28

5- About “Worldly Desires”

“Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?” – Surah Al-Jathiyah: 23

In conclusion, believers avoid anything that pollutes their heart and negatively affects their image in front of Allah (SWT). Above all, it’s essential to remain consistent in our efforts of becoming a better Muslim and keep our qalb clear of all vain and worldly desires.
