Revising Our Duty Towards Neighbors As Muslims

IslamicFinder  .  الخميس ديسمبر ٢٣, ٢٠٢١

Indeed, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala helps those who help His beings.

Islam directs us to stay on good terms with our neighbors, setting an example for the rest of the Muslim community worldwide.

Our inclusion means the most to those closest to us when we are there with them to celebrate their success and happiness. However, it is just as vital, if not more, to help our neighbors in times of need with discretion and honesty.

That said, here are five major responsibilities we have as Muslim neighbors, as depicted in the religion “Islam.”

1- To Think of Their Dignity As Our Own

It’s severely frowned upon in Islam to degrade or disrespect our neighbors based on their financial status, job, or education. While pride has no place in our religion, protecting dignity - especially of those around us - is imperative.

2- Not Letting Our Actions Discomfort Them

Moreover, we should never disrupt our neighbors’ routine or lifestyle just to satisfy our personal desires and cravings. Playing loud audio or holding parties late in the night is a prominent example of wrongdoing on our part in this scenario.

3- Protecting Our Neighbor’s Assets

Stealing from anyone is a big “no” in Islam as it is. However, as Muslims, we must also protect our neighbors if we see someone harming them or stealing from their property.

4- Sharing Our Food With Them

Not to mention, sharing food with our neighbors - whether Muslims or Non-Muslims - is a practice emphasized by our Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Not only does this bring us closer to our neighbors, but it also helps them when they’re struggling to put food on their table on a daily basis.

5- Helping Them Financially and Emotionally

Lastly, it is our responsibility as Muslim neighbors to help those closest to us when they require it financially. That said, it’s best to be discreet about it since protecting their dignity is also our obligation as dutiful neighbors.

Similarly, being emotionally available for them is just as important, especially when we see our neighbors dragging themselves relentlessly with no shoulder to lean on.

May Allah (SWT) give us the opportunity to fulfill all our responsibilities as committed Muslims. Ameen.
